Sing, Sing, Sing
The old bulb light comes on in the pontiac as she opens the door and drops into the seat, sliding around a bit as you do with nice clothes on good old leather. The rain menaces and then she manages the long door shut and she sits up drops down her visor (lights come on automatically) and she checks her lips, and eyes, then flips it up, sits back as much as someone with good posture can sit back in a pontiac and looks over at me then then back in front of her at the marble gray the rain has made of the windshield.
I just keep looking at her.
she sighs.
“and?” I say with emphasis on the Well, what the fuck happened in there?
She shakes her head quickly side to side in a no/nevermind and makes a noise both ‘ugh’ and ‘no’ simultaneously and sits up again like rocking forward will make the car move, like i am not driving, like that will make me go.
And it does.
40 minutes later and we have passed a rather Lit roadhouse outside Burlington but are still another hour and forty minutes from the cottage i got us in Marblehead. the Asylum can wait til tommorow. I slow and pull off the road, then across the interstate and into the lot in front of Chester’s. She could use a dance, and a drink and i could use a drink, and a break from rain driving
Inside, she grabs my hand and leads me to the bar and waits for me to order drinks.
“Kosu, some plums and a Moscow Mule for the lady”
“What?”
Kosu. Sake. Its Sake.
“They wont have Sake here”
“we don’t have Sake, what are you a communist?”
“I don’t know, what am I?” I ask back letting my coat fall open a bit revealing my shoulder holster and my 1911.
“I don’t have Sake” he says again.
“Give me avodka and Lemon Lime soda.”
The bartender nods and moves away, I turn my back to the bar and back towards Ash who is twisting and excited looking at the dance floor. It dawns on me that when her song comes on and it will, I will be drug out there to dance whether I am done with my ciggarette or not, and I guess thats okay, but fuck, a drink and a smoke first, please, unverse, death on my terms?
I bend over and check my ankle holster and receive a slap on the shoulder from her and stand back up and she points across the room to a table by the dance floor. Turn back to the bartender
“Hoss” I call and he looks up at me. i gesture across the room at the seats and he nods. I trun and take her hand and lead her through the crown and make it to the table. i find a clean chair nad check it and then held it for her, she sits, and scoots it closer to the table and i move around and take off my coat and jacket and gloves and begin to roll up my sleeves while sitting down.
Its been a long time is almost over and its been a long time since that was not followed by her song. A pretty, throaty gal is singing, thick legs but good voice. Ash is smoking again and send the candy doll away.
“I can ask Hoss if there is a place nearby we can get a room?”
She just keeps bobbing and shakes off my question.
“You wanna stay?”
Still ignoring me. fuck, were gonna be here all night. I get the candy dolls attention and ask here where a couple could get a room around here, and she leans forward to answaer and i hear it, the drums, and i think i hear a word but then Ask has bragged me and yanked me up and to the floor and that is it, were dancing, and I am throwing her around in circles, and and it takes us and the night is just gone..
